Did You Know?

Did you know...? Spike and Ike are both chameleons!
Here are some awesome facts about them:
  • "Chameleon means ‘Earth Lion’.
  • Chameleons react to heat and cold by changing color. Changing the skin colour is an expression of the physical and physiological condition of the lizard. The color also plays an important part in communication between other chameleons. If they are fearful or territorial, their emotions will evoke a particular color/pattern.
  • Chameleons are "ectotherms", animals whose temperatures are controlled from outside their bodies.
  • They hear vibrations in the air, which help them find food and stay safe from their enemies. They are almost deaf, but can hear tones and feel vibrations."

Did you know...?
"A chameleon's eyes are the most distinctive among the reptiles. The upper and lower eyelids are joined, with only a pinhole large enough for the pupil to see through. They can rotate and focus their eyes separately to observe two different objects simultaneously. It in effect gives them a full 360-degree arc of vision around their body."

Did you know...?
Sasafrass is a type of lizard that changes color, but he isn't a chameleon. He's a Green Anole! Here are some cool facts about him:
  • Green Anoles are often referred to as the American chameleon, although they are unrelated to chameleons.
  • Males are distinguishable from females because males have a pink dewlap, a flap of skin that hangs in an arc below their neck. This dewlap is used for attracting females and in territorial displays.
  • Green anoles have adhesive lamellae (sticky stuff) on their foot-pads for crawling along walls.

Did you know...?
Oscar is a Leopard Gecko, a completely different type of lizard. Here are some awesome facts about him:
  • Geckos are unique among lizards in their vocalizations, making chirping sounds in social interactions with other geckos.
  • Almost all geckos have no eyelids and instead have a transparent membrane which they lick to clean.
  • Many species are well known for their specialized toe pads that enable them to climb smooth and vertical surfaces, and even cross indoor ceilings with ease. These species are often welcome guests, as they feed on insects, including mosquitoes.
  • Another exciting facts about leopard gecko is the color of their eyes. They vary from one leopard gecko to the other. Most of them vary from bright red, solid color red, to darker that is almost approximate to black.
  • Since geckos are naturally nocturnal, their eyes are only adapted for nightly use. They can see better at night than any other time of the day when the light is present. This is the reason why their pupils close into slits to prevent the light from coming in to their eyes. If they do not do it, their eyes would be seriously damaged.
